Raiganj College is one of the biggest colleges in the Northern part of West Bengal. Established in 1948, the college has been taken over by North Bengal University in 1968, and since then it has become a University College and is been directly managed by the University of North Bengal. The Campus sprawls over an area of 13.63 acres of land, which contains departments, teacher's quarters, canteen, a garden of medicinal plants and mulberry garden. Raiganj College runs both honours and general courses in undergraduate level in almost all traditional subjects and a few subjects of recent origin. The College also teaches post graduate course in Bengal.
Raiganj College comes under the grant-in-aid institutional category and is recognized by UGC as per its Act 2(f) and 12(B) since 1956. The college has been taken over by the University of North Bengal in 1968 as one of its University Colleges. Raiganj College imparts Undergraduate education in Arts, Science and Commerce. Newly introduced courses are Computer Applications (BCA) and self-financing Post-Graduate courses in Bengali. The college also offers Ph.D. Programme at Department of Botany, Chemistry and Physics under the University of North Bengal.
The present student strength of Raiganj College is 3775, which includes 2 overseas students, 16 students from other states, and 1195 girl students. At present there are 49 permanent teachers of whom 16 have Ph.D. And 9 have M.Phil degree. There are 3 contractual and 16 part-time teachers, amoung them 2 are M.Phil. There are 6 technical and 27 administrative staffs. Raiganj College Campus is fully utilised for own activities. However, some outside agencies, like Government and Non-Government Organizations are permitted to use the infrastructure for various examinations, social and cultural activities and academic programmes. Every effort is made to keep the campus clean and pollunation free by planting trees and by discouraging smoking in the campus.
Raiganj College has a Library with more than 41,500 volumes of text and reference books. 22 Journals / Periodicals and magazines and it subscribes to 5 daily newspapers. There is a reading room attached to the library. Computerization of cataloging and issue sections have been initiated. There is Library Advisory Committee which looks after the proper functioning of the library.
Raiganj College has facilities for sports. It has a playground for games like football, cricket, volleyball, etc, a common room with indoor games like carrom, table tennis, etc. The Athletic Committee of the Student's Union conducts Annual Sports Tournaments, both for Indoor and Outdoor games. The College Team participates in the Inter-Collegiate sports events of the University. Students excelling in these activities are given sports accessories, financial help etc.
Raiganj College has a Botanical Garden built over an area of 3.5 acres including pond with many rare medicinal plants. The sericulture Department of the College has raised mulberry garden over an area of 1.8 acres. Both the Botanical and Mulberry garden are sources of some income for the College.
