Sahyadri Science College - Shimoga was established in the year 1940 as an Intermediate College by the erstwhile Mysore Governement during the rule of His Highness King Jayachamarajendra Wadeyar of Mysore. Sahyadri Science College - Shimoga was upgraded to the First Grade College level in the year 1956 and named as Government First Grade College. Influenced by the scenic landscape couched in the Sahyadri Hills, Dr. K V Puttappa (Kuvempu) the First recipient of Jnana Peeta award winner and the then Vice Chancellor of Mysore University urged the Government to rename the College as Sahyadri College. It was in 1962. Sahyadri Science College - Shimoga was started in the city and later shifted to its present location outside the city of Bangalore Honnavar Highway in 1948. Today the building has a solid stone structure with an imposing view. Sahyadri College - Shimoga offers different kind of undergraduate, postgraduate and Add on courses.

The ambience is conducive for the overall development of the students. Principal of Sahyadri Science College is the President and overall in charge of the Hostel administration. Besides, there is a warden to supervise and maintain the hostel. There is a TV and news paper gallery for the benefit of the students. The UGC has approved a girl's hostel.
Sahyadri Science College - Shimoga is one of the twenty privileged colleges in the country to participate in the Ford Foundation sponsored global project called "Pathways". The main objective of the project is to identify the academically distinguished students from the socially and economically marginalized sections of the society and to help them access higher education through financial and academic assistance.
National Cadet Corps at Sahyadri Science College - Shimoga was established basing on the recommendations of Khunjru committee in 1948. The aims of NCC were to develop qualities of leadership, character, spirit of sportsmanship and the ideal of service among the students. The service training provided should also enable them to obtain commission to the armed forces. Such disciplined man power should be of use during the national emergency. Sahyadri Science College - Shimoga provided NCC training from the year 1953. The NCC unit is now called 2B/20 Company of the 20 Karnataka Battalion NCC. There are 75 SD boys and 20 SD girls undergoing NCC training during the year 2006-07 academic year.
Realizing the importance of good placement in the student's career, Sahyadri Science College - Shimoga has started Career Training and Placement Cell under the Pathways project from the academic year 2007-08. The cell has a carpet area of 1800 Sq. feet and is designed exclusively to impart quality training to the aspirants to get good placement. The cell has professionally trained faculty. It has a professional ambience with the state of the art technology and expertise. Training is imparted to the students in areas like Communication Skills and offers Professional packages like Tally, DTP, Web designing etc. The students can make use of 'flexi-timing' facility and receive training during their leisure hours any time between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Sahyadri Science College - Shimoga is planning to enter into tie-up with some reputed training and placement agencies in order to promote better employment opportunities to the students. It may be acknowledged that companies like Wipro, Infosys, L& T, and Fidelity have been holding placement workshops for the last three years and selected many students.
