Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem was started in the year 1961 with the Pre University course as an affiliated college to the Madras University. It is managed by Sri Sarada Educational Trust, run by Sanyasins of the holy order of Sri Sarada Samithi dedicated to the spread of education, especially that of women. The college caters to the needs of rural and semi urban population in and around Salem. The foundation stone of the Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem has been laid by former President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan on 6th January 1963. The donor, who donated all her property and personally guided the management in planning and development of the Institution at the initial stages; has sown the seeds for development of women in the region.
Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem became autonomous in 1988-89 and continued since then. By the year 2001 the college completed four decades of service in the cause of Womens education. Aspiring for a wider recognition, the college volunteered to be assessed by the NAAC. The self study report was submitted by the College to the NAAC on 2nd January 2002. A peer team constituted by NAAC consisting of Prof. P. Geervani, Chairperson, Prof.V.G.Bhamburkar and Prof. M. Ramachandra Kurup as members visited the institution for two days from 14th to 15th March 2002.
Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem campus is spread over an area of 26 acres of land with spacious well planned buildings with well connected internal roads accommodating college, library, auditorium, hostel and allied institutions. The basic facilities are provided on the campus with all amenities, present a very clean and serene atmosphere. Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem mission and goal are stated as harmonious development of hand, head and heart. The day begins with morning assembly prayer, meditation and yoga which are made compulsory to all students and faculty. Value education of one hour a week is made compulsory for all students. Dress code, comprising of full or half salary is prescribed for the students. Students are expected to wear uniform on the 1st Monday of the month.
Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem is located in a sprawling campus measuring about 26 acres of land with a number of buildings, consisting of class rooms, laboratories auditorium, seminar halls, library, Bakery, Dairy, Printing press, quarters for Principal and some teachers, school buildings, gas plant, car shed, cycle stand, administrative building etc. The infrastructure facilities are well maintained and adequate for the smooth functioning of the Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem . The college has a central library besides departmental libraries and has a total volume of 72,215 books. The library has a book bank scheme for the needy. The college subscribes to mostly periodicals and a few journals. Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem has centralized computing facilities for all departments at one common place. Other related accessories like printers, UPS are also available. The computers for the Department have been procured from the special fund received from UGC for autonomy.
Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem has an attached health centre managed by a part time doctor and a full time nurse and conduct annual medical checkup of the students. The physical education facilities of the college are excellent with various courts for outdoor games, athletics, and so on. Prominent among sports and games are volleyball, basketball, shuttle badminton, ball badminton, hockey and athletics.
The college has a hostel to accommodate 450 students and a few staff. It also has a well-maintained kitchen, dining halls and other utilities. The management also runs an old age home, where Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem students get opportunities to interact with the aged, which brings them face to face with hard social realities. There is scope for extending the library working time beyond 5 PM and beyond 180 days, as it would benefit hostel students and others preparing for examinations. Considering strength of the college the reading room space is inadequate and the staff to manage the library is insufficient. Being an autonomous college, it has the potential to develop computer aided learning packages for augmenting teaching and learning in the Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem .
The students living in the hostel wished to have at least a TV for relaxation. A reprographic facility and Internet in the library would qualitatively change the utility. A canteen and a common room for rest would add to the need of the students. There is scope for some of the PG departments for exploring the possibility of offering consultancy services to the local industries, women entrepreneurs and the community, based on the in-house expertise available. Services of successful alumni could also be made use of in rendering such services.
Extension activities are taken up in the form of social work, community development, health and aids awareness, environmental awareness etc. Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem students and teachers are encouraged to participate in these activities. These activities are conducted within the budgetary allocation. More resources to conduct extension activities could be generated. The institution can also offer extension services in the area of expertise available.
NSS units of Sri Sarada College for Women – Salem organize rural camps and the district administration frequently call upon NSS units for organizing awareness camps. Their extension activity in creating awareness in the area of female infanticide is note worthy. The college NSS unit serves as a resource for community development programmes undertaken by district administration. Social Service League unit participated in social awareness programmes in the area of health and hygiene, prevention of aids and environment.
