St Aloysius College - Alappuzha was founded in 1965 by St. George's Forane Church, Edathua. It was the realization of the vision and far sightedness of late Very. Rev. Fr. Zacharias Punnappadom (the first manager) and Dr. P.T. Joseph (the first Principal). The great visionaries had in their mind the noble task of imparting quality higher education in the backward agrarian region of Kuttanad which lacked any facility for higher education. The college, though run by the catholic minority community, admits students of all castes and creeds with due respect to different faiths and religious denominations.
St Aloysius College - Alappuzha is situated at Edathua, Alappuzha, Kerala. The college had a very humble beginning. It started functioning in St. Aloysius High School as a junior college affiliated to the University of Kerala with 189 students, 9 teachers and 7 non-teaching staff. In 1966, the college was shifted to the present site. The institution owes an immense debt of gratitude to late Very Rev. Fr. Cyriac Kottayil who in his capacity as the manager was instrumental in erecting the main building of the college. In the year 1983, following the bifurcation of Kerala University the college came under the jurisdiction of the newly established Mahatma Gandhi University.
To meet the overgrowing demand for higher education in the region, St Aloysius College - Alappuzha was upgraded in 1977 by introducing undergraduate programme in Economics. Post graduate programme was introduced in 1984. The institution also offers facility for some cost sharing certificate courses like DCA, PGDCA etc to its stakeholders.
St Aloysius College - Alappuzha has now grown into a premier educational institution with 68 teaching staff, 34 non-teaching staff and 881 students on the rolls. It has now to its credit 9 UG courses and 3 PG courses. Besides it is the only approved distance education centre of Mahatma Gandhi University in the entire Kuttanad region.
St Aloysius College - Alappuzha is a first grade college which has completed forty one years of glorious service to the cause of higher education. The college celebrated Ruby Jubilee in the academic year 2005-06 and is now a well-established NAAC accredited centre of learning offering a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The department of Commerce also offers facility for research leading to the award of Ph.D.
Library is the nerve centre of all the academic activities of the college. It provides a place where teachers and students can pursue research and study unhampered by noise or any other disturbance. Its facilities and services exist solely to cater to the needs of the academic community of St Aloysius College - Alappuzha . St Aloysius College - Alappuzha has broad band internet facility spread over seven terminals connected by LAN. Students and members of the staff can have access to various web sites including the best libraries across the globe through the internet. St Aloysius College - Alappuzha Centre with thirty modern computers provides a centralized computering facility to the students and staff. Short term courses are conducted for promoting computer literacy among the college community. In collaboration with Yuvadeepthi College of Management Studies, Changanacherry, the centre offers PGDCA course. The centre has broad band internet connectivity shared among eight terminals.
St Aloysius College - Alappuzha provides hostel for lady students with the Adoration Convent Sisters, Edathua. Visitors except guardians are not permitted in the hostel. There is a well-furnished seminar hall on the third floor of the main building with a seating capacity of 200 persons. It is a place where students meet and view classic movies, conduct discussions and practice film criticism. Students are given practical guidance in documentary making, vediography, editing and dubbing. Media room is equipped with digital camera, digital handycam, LCD projector and OHP. The students of B.A. English have already produced a thirty minutes documentary on Kuttanad named "OZHUKK".
As the youth needs more concern and sympathy and to lead them to maturity, St Aloysius College - Alappuzha provides guidance and counselling. The service of an expert counsellor is made available on alternate Thursdays and as and when required. Teachers are also available for counselling on request.
