St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata was established on 29th of August 2000 on a land measuring 5.276 acre allotted by the St. Thomas' School based on the No Objection Certificate granted by the Government of West Bengal vide Order No.591-Edn(T) dated 28th December, 1999 issued by the Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) granted approval vide letter No. 750-80-123(E)/ET/2000 dated 13.07.2000 issued by the Adviser (E&T).
The approval of St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata was extended by AICTE for the academic session 2001-02, 2002-03 & 2003-04 vide letters F.No.750-80-123(E)/ET/2000, F.No.750-80-123(E)/ET/2000 dated July 03 2001, 03.06.2003 & 30th April 2003 respectively. The approval was extended for academic session 2006-07 vide vorder F.No.750-80-123(E)/ET/2000 dated 15.05.2006.
In a bid to supplement the efforts of the West Bengal Government and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in expanding the infrastructure of technical education in this region it was contemplated in 2000 to establish an St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata for the benefit of students in West Bengal in general and assist the Christian students in the region, in particular. To give the idea a shape, St. Thomas' College of Engineering & Technology was established with the intention to impart quality technical education to the students and imbibe confidence into the young talents graduating from the institution to stand up to the challenges of life with confidence. To ensure this, a plan was made so that it could become a seat of excellence in due course of time. Based on this preamble, the St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata at 4, Diamond Harbor Road, Kidder pore, Kolkata 700023, West Bengal came into being on 29th August 2000.
St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata Library is a well organized Technical library which is totally computerized and equipped with Internet Facilities. It has a 3704 square feet carpet area of which 1226 square feet is provided for a comfortable reading room with 136 seats for students. The reading room of the library remains open from 9 A.M to 8 P.M on weekdays and on Saturdays from 9 A.M to 5 P.M. Reprographic facilities like photocopying; computer printouts etc are also available for the students. The Library has three main sections that is General, Book Bank and Journal section.
St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata Students can borrow three books from the General Section against their three Library Cards. They may also get two books as selected by them from the Book-Bank, for each semester. In special cases, the authority considers and approves applications from needy and deserving students for more books from the Book-Bank. Apart from the above mentioned sections we have Departmental Libraries for EE, ECE, CSE/IT, Humanities and Science Departments.
St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata provides best computer facility to the students. Students have an unlimited Internet access from 9.30 AM to 8 PM. For faster access two 1 MBPS Broadband connection have been provided. All 210 computers in the lab have LAN facility. The multimedia lab is equipped with Handy cam, Web camera, Stereophonic headphone etc to provide the students the best technology. A special lab is designed to train the students in Novell Netware also. In the St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata there are some other labs such as Programming Practice Lab, Numerical Methods & Programming Lab, Data Structure Lab, Data Base Management System Lab, Multimedia Lab, Internet working Lab, Logic & Function Programming Lab, Object Technology Lab, Software Engineering Lab, Operation Research Lab, Operating System Lab, and Computer Architecture Lab.
The St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata Lab has full facilities for the students and staff of the college to improve their speaking as well as reading skills. The lab provides the facilities in the form of audio recording system along the tuning and toning of their voice levels. To gain confidence as a speaker under different circumstances, they are trained for GD, Seminars as well as Project presentations.
These are the workshops which are available within the St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata campus where students can do practical also such as Carpentry, Bench work, fitting Work, Welding (Gas and Arc), Lathe machine works, Drilling using Drill Machine, Grinding, Milling, and Shaping Machine works. The workshop is taken under the guidance of experience faculty covering all the safety measures at the time of experiment.

A Training and placement cell is functioning in the St Thomas College of Engineering and Technology – Kolkata for the benefit of the students. Though no guarantee can be given fro the placement of all the students, efforts are made to familiarize them with the working in industries. They are trained to present themselves in a manner to suitably expose their potential to prospective employers. While it may not be possible to change their trait and attitude altogether, major thrust will be to provide a finishing touch to their skill and knowledge.
