Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College - Thrissur was founded by the late Ashtavaidyan E.T. Neelakandan Mooss on 2nd October 1976 and is under the management of Vaidyaratnam Ayurvedic Educational Society, registered under the Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act XII/1955. Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College - Thrissur is an outstanding institution in terms of academic excellence and achievements. The various departments and affiliated facilities, besides providing ample academic inputs, also contribute towards research that is on par with international standards.
Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College - Thrissur has got 13 teaching departments which awaits final approval of the Government. Establishment of a separate department for Panchakarma is under the active consideration of the authorities. Brief report highlighting the activities of each department is available here.Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College - Thrissur has a major hospital complex in the campus as well as a hospital annex located at Poochinnippadam, less than 3 kms away from the campus. The bed strength is 150. The hospitals are equipped with modern diagnostic and clinical facilities, including two operation theatres, modern bio-chemic laboratory, an X-ray unit, E.C.G. and Ultra Sound Scan unit. A physiotherapy and rehabilitation unit is also attached.
There is a central Library attached to the Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College - Thrissur having an exhaustive collection of more than 8000 books including some of the rarest books in Ayurveda. The Library is in the process of digitalization. The Library has also attached broadband internet facilities for the use of students and teaching faculties. Space is provided for the review of current National and International Journals. In addition to the Central Library, all the departments are provided with department libraries.
Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College - Thrissur is affiliated to the Calicut University and offers B.A.M.S. degree (Ayurveda acharya). The course is recognized by the Central Council of Indian Medicines (CCIM) and is of a duration of 5½ years. The sprawling campus accommodates administrative and academic blocks, hospitals, auditorium, herbal garden, hostels for men and women and facilities for sports and games. Herbal garden of medical plants is a pre-requisite for identifying medical herbs by students and teachers. A herbal garden with a collection of about 1000 medicinal plants of about 200 different species, among which even exotic red listed medicinal plants of endangered nature is kept and maintained in the Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College - Thrissur Campus.

Interaction with such subject specialists gives motivation to both teachers and students. Utilizing the funding provided by CCIM, the Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College - Thrissur organized reorientation training in Prasoothithanthra, Streeroga, Rasasasthra and Bhaishajyakalpana during January - February 2008.
