The origin of Tohoku University - Sendai was Meirin-yokendo which was founded as a medical school in Sendai in 1736. It was reorganized a few times. Later it became Sendai Medical College, this was the forerunner of the medical department of the university. On June 22, 1907, Tohoku University - Sendai was established under the name Tohoku Imperial University by the Meiji government as the third Imperial University of Japan, following the Tokyo Imperial University (1877) and the Kyoto Imperial University(1897). From its start, it has advocated "Open-door" policies. This stems from that it first began to accept female students as well as foreign students in Japan universities, the first in the country to do so.
In September 1907, Tohoku University - Sendai set up the faculty of Agriculture in Sapporo; Sapporo Agricultural College took the lead it. It set up the Science (1911), and the Medical Department (1915); the latter had been Sendai Medical College. In 1918 it ceded the Faculty of Agriculture to Hokkaido Imperial University. It subsequently launched Faculties of Engineering (1919), and Law and Literature (1922). After World War II Tohoku University - Sendai assumed its current name, Tohoku University (1947) and acquired a new Faculty of Agriculture. Furthermore, the old Faculty of Law and Literature was split up to form new faculties of Law, Literature, and Economics (1949). Further additions: Faculty of Education (1949), Dentistry (1965) and Pharmacy (1972). Tohoku has been a national university corporation since April 2004. In 2007, Tohoku University - Sendai celebrated the 100 anniversary since its establishment in 1907. Subsequent to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the university was declared closed until further notice, but with a tentative re-opening date of the end of the following April.

Tohoku University - Sendai Aobayama, Katahira and Kawauchi campuses are all at least 12 kilometers from the Ocean side, towards the mountains and therefore suffered no damage resulting from the Tsunami. Furthermore no deaths or serious injuries within the faculty and student body were reported on campus grounds. The extent of the earthquake damage however did lead to the closure of 27 buildings and millions of dollars of damage due to damaged and equipment loss. Classes have resumed normally since early May and plans for restoring, reinforcing or replacing damaged buildings are underway. The radiology department has been actively measuring radiation levels throughout the city of Sendai since the Fukushima Nuclear Power plant meltdown, which is about 100 kilometers south. So far no alarming levels of radiation has been detected.
At Tohoku University - Sendai a number of various academic resources and materials have been preserved through studies of Arts, Social Sciences, and Nature Sciences within its 100 years' history. The Tohoku University Museum maintains and collects all these resources as well as research using these resources in cooperation with researchers from outside and inside of the university. Nishizawa Memorial Room is located at the site of old Research Institute for Semiconductors where Jun-ichi Nishizawa, the former president of Tohoku University - Sendai , had developed technologies of semiconductor materials. The memorial room preserves and exhibits materials associated with the Birthplace of Optical Communications to share with local communities and to contribute to future educational researches.
Tohoku University - Sendai Archives (Japanese) facility preserves and exhibits the official records and historical resources associated with Tohoku University and former faculty members. Regard with Tohoku University the 100th Anniversary, Tohoku University Centennial Hall (Kawauchi Hagi Hall) was reconstructed from Matushita Hall. This hall is opened for public and accepts application from public.
Tohoku University - Sendai library is available not only for students and faculty members but also for public. The library preserves two national treasures; "Karino-collection which is "famous for Edo culture, and "Natsume-collection"which includes autograph copy written by Soseki Natsume and other related resources. These resources are publicized on the web. At the entrance of the library "permanent exhibit" is displayed, and "special exhibit" is displayed in autumn. At this exhibition, rare resources are opened to the public. With the respect of the philosophy of "aiming at balancing the Patient-centered medicine and highly-advanced medical technology", Tohoku University - Sendai hospital intends to be a open public hospital which responds the needs from society in addition to foster medical staffs with a rich sense of humanity.
