University of Ontario Institute of Technology - UOIT Oshawa was founded in 2002 by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Act, 2002 as a public, career-focused university emphasizing science and technology, and as part of the Ontario government’s initiative to create more spaces in postsecondary institutions for the double cohort. UOIT's new slogan, "Challenge, Innovate, Connect" was unveiled in June 2006. University of Ontario Institute of Technology - UOIT Oshawa accepted 947 students in 2003 and total enrolment was over 5,000 in the 2007–2008 school year, making it the fastest growing university in Ontario. The student population for 2009 was 6285 and 7018 in 2010.
Construction on the university's first buildings began in 2002. The facilities currently include a library shared with Durham College, the Science Building, and the Business and IT Building as well as a state of the art virtual hospital for nursing students. University of Ontario Institute of Technology - UOIT Oshawa Power Generation Engineering Building opened in September 2006. The residences for UOIT are Simcoe Village and South Village. The Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) is connected to the Ontario Power Generation Engineering Building and is scheduled to open in 2011. ACE is a multi-level testing and research centre that will allow for full climatic, durability and lifecycle testing. It has a full range of testing facilities including a five story high climatic wind tunnel. Plans have been announced for the Centre for Cybercrime Research which will be a separate, permanent location on campus and will be dedicated to leading-edge research and the training of graduate and undergraduate students in various aspects of cybercrime. In addition, an expansion to the athletic facilities, funded largely by students, was completed in September 2007.
As one of Canada's youngest and most dynamic universities, University of Ontario Institute of Technology - UOIT Oshawa is rapidly growing in reputation and in enrolment at the undergraduate and graduate levels. To address that growth and ensure our students continue to have access to an outstanding learning environment, University of Ontario Institute of Technology - UOIT Oshawa established a downtown Oshawa location and has added new classrooms, labs, study areas and state-of-the-art learning facilities at the north Oshawa location.
The downtown Oshawa campus is thriving. In 2008 the Faculty of Education was warmly received when it moved to a refurbished building at 11 Simcoe Street North. In September 2010 the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities moved into the new 2,787-square-metre, five-storey building at 55 Bond Street East and will occupy 61 Charles Street when the winter semester begins in January 2011. More than 1,300 students and faculty now study and work in downtown Oshawa. Students move between 55 Bond Street East, the Regent Theatre, 61 Charles Street, 11 Simcoe Street North, and the CIBC building at 2 Simcoe Street South to attend lectures and labs and access to important student services.
University of Ontario Institute of Technology - UOIT Oshawa buildings on the north Oshawa campus set it apart. Designers incorporated a number of environmentally-advanced features into the buildings including green roofs, coated windows and a geothermal heating and cooling system. Within them students attend classes in state-of-the-art learning facilities where they are immersed in a leading-edge, technology-rich learning environment that allows them to connect with their professors and peers at anytime from anywhere - putting them at least one step ahead when they graduate. The award-winning Campus Library was built in 2004, designed to incorporate leading-edge technology while maintaining the comfort of a traditional library. Students enjoy 73,000-square-feet of total learning space over four floors, including the Dixon-Alger Fireside Reading Room with a two-storey glass wall that overlooks the Polonsky Commons.
At University of Ontario Institute of Technology - UOIT Oshawa we offer the best of both worlds when it comes to residence - all the comforts of home in a unique campus community experience. Our residences offer convenience, great friendships and the chance to connect with all that campus life has to offer. The Simcoe Village and South Village residences offer accommodations for 1,360 students and if you're a first-year student starting your program in September, you're guaranteed a spot in residence if you meet the deadlines for accepting UOIT's offer of admission and applying to residence. The Campus Bookstore has three retail outlets that serve our campus community. One is located at the Oshawa Campus in the Gordon Willey Building, as well as one in the Science Building. There is also a bookstore at the Whitby Skills Training Centre, adjacent to the main entrance. Items you will find in the bookstores include: course textbooks, stationery supplies, software, clothing, giftware and snacks.
The Campus Childcare Centre (CCC) is an incorporated, not-for-profit childcare centre designed to meet the needs of today's families. Conveniently located and committed to providing high quality childcare services and programs, the CCC exists to serve the needs of students, faculty and staff at University of Ontario Institute of Technology - UOIT Oshawa and Durham College as well as local families. The Campus Health Centre is committed to the delivery of high quality health care services that promote student health in a professional and confidential manner. These efforts are more successful in pursuing their educational objectives.

Over the past few years, significant effort has gone into enhancing our parking facilities and systems. New lots have been created and we have refurbished many of our existing lots.
