William Allen was a British Cardinal (a senior ecclesiastical official, an ecclesiastical prince, and usually an ordained bishop) of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in 1532 in Rossall, England and died at the age of 62 on 16 October 1594 in Rome. He served as the Principal and Proctor of the then Saint Mary's Hall in 1556. William Allen is also responsible for the establishment of the English College, Douai in 1568. He also served as the Cardinal priest of Ss. Silvestro e Martino ai Monti. Among the Printed works of William Allen include An Apology for the English Seminaries (1581), Apologia Martyrum (1583), De Sacramentis (Antwerp, 1565; Douay, 1603) etc.
