Kalimpong College – Darjeeling a pioneer co-educational institution was established by the order of the Govt. on the 12th November 1962, with the aim of "providing higher education to the people of the backward place of Kalimpong". This was a long cherished dream come true for the people of Kalimpong. It took exactly 98 years for the people of these areas to get an institution of higher learning since the British acquired Kalimpong in 1865 which became a subdivision of the district of Darjeeling in 1866. Kalimpong College – Darjeeling was set up in the Hill Top Area in a rented bungalow. It had to be shifted to the 'Nanduram Building', Topkhana, Kalimpong, popularly known as the 'Oon Godam' in 1971, to accommodate the increasing number of students. The College was without a building of its own for about twenty years jeopardizing its future development.
The need to have a building and land of its own was so deeply felt by then that a Joint Action Committee of Students' and Staff put their body, mind and soul to achieve this objective. The travails of the students and staff as well as the local people came to a fruitful end when a College building was constructed in its own land at Rishi Bankim Chandra Park, Ring kingpong Road, about 1 km. up and southwards from Kalimpong town. Finally, Kalimpong College – Darjeeling was shifted to the new building on the 6th June 1982 and there was no looking back. The construction of an additional with five storey foundation was initiated in 1993. At present, Kalimpong College – Darjeeling has six class rooms which accommodate about 500 students. A new building which is accommodating the B.B.A. department and will accommodate a day care centre, a smart class room and the college office is near completion. The building is the pride of the college as it is being built from its own fund.

With the progress of the time Kalimpong College – Darjeeling has been contributing towards the transformation of society through the propagation of knowledge and education in the line of prevailing national standard incorporating the values of equality of opportunities, freedom, social justice and secularism. Kalimpong College – Darjeeling also supports and provides free education for selected poor. With 'Seek and Ye Shall Find' as its motto, the College seeks to provide the best possible education for its students. The College boasts of having a students' strength more than 1800. It also enjoys the support of the College Alumni Association.
There is no denying the fact that Kalimpong College – Darjeeling from its nascent stage has gone from strength to strength, and by now it has progressed by leaps and bounds. To begin with, the College had a single faculty of B.A. Pass Course but within a span of 49 year it has become a multi faculty College offering B.A./B.Sc./B.Com/Pass and Honours Courses. The self financing courses such as B.B.A., T.T.M., Functional English are carrier oriented courses have been introduced from recent year. Even today, this College is the only institution that offers a wide range of academic curricula to the students, the majority of whom are from rural areas and socio-economically backward communities. Thus, it is obvious and understood that Kalimpong College has played an immensely significant role not only in imparting higher education but also in strengthening civil society and guiding the marginalized youths to become responsible citizens.
In its Endeavour to enhance its performance Kalimpong College – Darjeeling underwent a process of assessment and accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, which is an autonomous institution of U.G.C. On the basis of the evaluation and assessment of the College by the visiting Peer Team on December 2006, the NAAC has included the College in the quality map of Higher Education in India by accrediting at ''B'' Grade. Kalimpong College – Darjeeling has a Central Library containing more than 17000 books, journals and periodicals. It was initially designed to provide the students with the books within their curricula. Gradually advanced reference books have been added to meet the demands of the advanced learners.
Kalimpong College – Darjeeling provides ample opportunities to the students to participate in extra curricular activities for an all round development of their personality. The students' involvement is ensured through different Committees and Clubs like Games and Sports, Debate, Welfare, Magazine, Culture, Common Room, Eco Club, N.S.S. and N.C.C. etc. Students Exchange Programme are organized time to time in collaboration with the Education Resources Centre Trust, New Delhi, either by inviting students from the other reputed College or by sending our students to those Colleges so that they get better exposure and interaction.
