Kalna College – Bardhaman was established in the year 1943 in this place of confluence of divergent cultures in the past when the Second World War was at its zenith and Indian Freedom Movement was heading towards a final showdown. Kalna College – Bardhaman was a result of the ‘national awakening’ in that period of transition. Since then, this centre of learning braving all odds trod a long way with distinct mission of spreading higher education in this locality, once a seat of classical learning.
Kalna College – Bardhaman is one of the oldest colleges under the University of Burdwan, is now a flourishing institution with Honours teaching facilities in as many as thirteen subjects. The institution provides facilities for NCC training and NSS activities and has gained laurels in the field of games and sports. Kalna College – Bardhaman thus keeping pace with time continues to march forward with its objectives leaving behind several milestones like the Silver Jubilee and Golden Jubilee. National Assessment and Accreditation Council has been pleased to declare the college accredited at the B++ level. Kalna College – Bardhaman offers different kind of undergraduate courses.
Kalna College – Bardhaman is situated at P.O. - Kalna, District – Burdwan, West Bengal. The college maintains a resourceful and well equipped library with computer and internet facility. Students have access to the library on every working day from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 A.M. Every student is entitled to borrow books from the library against their home-card and reading-card. The library is also having a well-furnished and spacious reading room. Each student is supposed to strictly maintain rules and regulations of the library.
The sports history of Kalna College – Bardhaman over the decades is glorious and worthwhile. It has sustained in its glorious course the idealists concept of sports and games by nourishing physical prowess, recreational entertainment, pastime, intellectual skill and endurance on the one hand and by heralding the message of love, fellow-feeling, discipline, cooperation, harmony, integrity and humanity in all fields of life, on the other. The member of Kalna College Sports Team have not only fought and won many battles on the long avenue of journey, but also established excellence and eminence later in their individual as well as national events.
At Kalna College – Bardhaman provision has been made for the Boys’ and Girls’ Common Rooms separately in spacious and well-furnished halls fitted up with water work installation. Students have access to newspapers and periodicals. Facilities have also been provided in the common rooms for various indoor games such as table tennis, carrom etc. Every student or guardian must keep his/her Bicycle/Scooter/Moped in the Students’ Cycle Stand on payment of a nominal charge. Keeping of Bicycle/Two wheeler in any place other than the Bicycle stand of the College is strictly prohibited.
A xerox machine has been installed recently in the xerox centre of Kalna College – Bardhaman . A student may avail of the service of xeroxing at a concessional rate of 40 paise per page from the centre. Passport size photographs may also be prepared at this centre by the payment of Rs. 20/- for eight copies of such photographs. These facilities are available only to the students and staff of the college.
Attention is paid to the healthy co-curricular activities which are mainly carried on in co-operation with the Students’ Union. They include debates, essay competitions, educational tours, social and various other cultural functions and sports and games. Kalna College – Bardhaman has its own teams for Foot-ball, Cricket and Volly-ball and there is also arrangement for physical training under a trained Physical Instructress. Winners in the Annual Sports are awarded prizes and certificates.
Students, both boys and girls are encouraged to join National Cadet corps. under 54 Battalion. There are three units in Kalna College – Bardhaman two for boys and one for girls. The certificates provided to N.C.C. cadets are useful as records of their extracurricular activities. Besides the N.C.C., there are also two units of National Service Scheme functioning in the College with utmost importance. Both boys and girls who participate in N.S.S. are provided with certificates which enable them to develop their careers.
