Mar Athanasius College - Ernakulam came into being in 1956 after long years of untiring efforts of His Holiness Paulose Mar Athanasius, the Malankara Metropolitan, who in 1950 brought together a group of like minded persons who worked to the common end of establishing a institution par excellence.The group was constituted of Rev. Fr. Isaac V. Maliyil as convener, Sri. P.J.Varkey as Treasurer, Sri V.P Cheriyan as Secretary and Sri A.P.Varghese as Joint Secretary. The acquisition of 65 acres of land for the college was facilitated by the efforts of Sri. M.P.Varghese as MLA and Mr.E.John Philiphose, the Revenue Minister. After several meetings and consultations, Mar Athanasius College - Ernakulam Association, was constituted in 1953. His Grace Paulose Mar Philaxinose was elected as Chairman, Dr.P.T.Thomas as Vice Chairman, Sri. M.P.Varghese (Ex. M.L.A) as Secretary, Sri. P.J.Varkey as Treasurer and Fr. Isaac V. Maliyil, Sri. Kottalil P. Abraham and Sri. N.M. Chacko as members of the Executive Committee.
Mar Athanasius College - Ernakulam has grown into one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Kerala. Now accredited with 'A' grade by NAAC, Mar Athanasius College - Ernakulam has put Kothamangalam on the National educational map. It has now three Ph.D. programms, eight postgraduate courses and fifteen undergraduate courses. Varghese Library of Mar Athanasius College - Ernakulam, the first of its kind in Kerala to provide access to the internet service is the first college library in India to have achieved automation. The books and materials are catalogued into a computer which in turn is linked to the ongoing computer catalogues of various libraries in India and abroad.The library facilitates students of Mar Athanasius College - Ernakulam, members of the staff, and research scholars to have access to various web sites including the best libraries across the globe through the internet. A separate air-conditioned wing is set up in the library and the advanced multi-media pentium computer installed in it is officially linked to the well known international data banks and networks. M.P. Varghese Library Seminar Hall of Mar Athanasius College - Ernakulam has a sitting capacity for 108 persons and is fully air-conditioned with digital screen and DLP Projector. Seminar hall is being utilized for conducting various co-curricular activities like state level and national seminars, workshops, symposia and other conferences of current academic relevance. The hall is also a venue for PTA meeting, staff meeting, alumni meeting etc. Local self government organisations also organise events in the college seminar hall.
