Newman College - Idukki is the leading college in the Idukki District, with 5 post graduate courses imparting higher education for over 100 students of this backward district. Newman College - Idukki has 86 members on the teaching staff and 37 on the non-teaching staff.Newman College - Idukki is a minority Christian institution governed and managed by the Syrian Catholic diocese of Kothamangalam, specially founded to cater to the needs of all the community without any discrimination to other social segments.
One of the strengths of Newman College - Idukki is the students' club which is legally independent of the college administration. Such a structure provides a number of benefits, including giving students the autonomy to plan and run their own functions either in partnership with the administration (should the function be on college grounds) or separate to it, as well as contributing to a sense of tradition and belonging. All undergraduate members of Newman College - Idukki are accepted into the Newman College Students' Club (NCSC), a self-governing organisation which runs day-to-day and special events in the Newman College - Idukki. An executive committee (the general committee) is elected annually. The president, treasurer and functions representatives are elected directly to their positions. The president then allocates various portfolios to the elected members of the general committee. The portfolios include vice-president, secretary, culture, community service and male and female sports.
Apart from a reputation for academic excellence, the Newman College - Idukki places a strong emphasis on participation in co-curricular activities, with music, sport and the dramatic arts playing a large role in life at Newman College - Idukki. The 2009 college production was The Skin of Our Teeth by Thornton Wilder. Soirees are held many times throughout the year, showcasing the many talents of the students, with the Very Reverend Peter L'Estrange SJ Prize, awarded at the end of the year to the best performing artist in Newman College - Idukki. The Very Reverend Michael Scott SJ Prize is the annual art competition and the college is a strong participant in all inter-college sporting endeavours, especially in football, netball, softball and tennis.
Newman College - Idukki provides facilites such as Fully computerized library with 42,000 books and 100 periodicals. Computer Centre with Internet Facility, Science Museum,Canteen, Hostel for Ladies, English Language Laboratory , Chapel, M.G. University Study Centre, Public Call Office. Scholarships, prizes etc. are awarded by various agencies to encourage talented and hard working students. Details will be published on the notice-board in the course of the year. Students are exhorted to earn them and avail the concessions available.Majority of students in this Newman College - Idukki are women.
