University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore was established through an Act by the Mysore government in 1963. Although the university came into existence on August 21 1964, a journey into the broad-lands of history reveals it to be a much older institution. It would perhaps not be an exaggeration to say that the university was conceived way back in 1899 in the form of an experimental farm of 30 acres. Following this, an agricultural school was established in 1913 and the farm itself occupied 202 acres. In fact today this very farm constitutes the Main Research Station of the university. Such were the humble beginnings that the university, as it stands today, is a tribute to the visionaries who founded it and those who nurtured it over the past several decades.


University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore established Fisheries College at Mangalore in 1969 to offer Bachelor of Fisheries Science training and the Agricultural Engineering Institute at Raichur to offer three year diploma in Agricultural Engineering. In 1974, Home Science College was started to impart education in rural home science at Dharwad campus, besides establishing a College of Basic Sciences and Humanities and College of Post Graduate Studies at Hebbal.


The Government of Mysore headed by Sri S Nijalingappa, CM, in April 1963 decides to establish UAS along the lines of Land Grant College system of USA and passes the University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore Bill Act which receives assent of the President of India on 25th May 1963 to become the Law, and grants 1300 acres to Gandhi Krishi Vigjana Kendra Campus. Government appoints Dr KC Naik, M.Sc, PhD (Bristol) as the first Vice Chancellor on 12th June 1964. The UAS inaugurated by Dr Zakir Hussain, the Vice President of India on 21st Aug 1964 in the presence of Mr Chester Bowles, US Ambassador to India and Sri S Nijalingappa, the CM. Smt Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister, inaugurates GKVK campus on the 12th July.


Objectives of University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore is to make agricultural education responsive to the growing and changing needs of the society in general and aspirations of the farming community in particular. To establish a dynamic system of agricultural education to train highly skilled and competent manpower to address the challenging tasks with new emerging areas of research, extension and industry. University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore is to develop suitable end-use technologies to solve farmers’ problems vis-à-vis agricultural production including animal husbandry and fisheries and foster research aimed at conceptual advances in all disciplines for technology development in the long run. To establish state-of-art infrastructure including well-equipped laboratories, extensive farmlands and an operational research management system that will ensure quick, efficient and cost effective implementation of research programmes. To ensure that the research findings and innovations, after their proven demonstration, are communicated to the farmers on a logistically feasible scale. This mechanism acts as an interface between farmers and researchers and enables identification of problems through a positive feedback.

City is well connected by Air, Rail and Road transport. It is also called electronic city of India and of late it has attracted Floriculture and Horticultural Units to establish their export units at Bangalore. Bangalore is said to be an air-conditioned city, which enjoys ideal weather conditions. University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore offers different kind of bachelor and master courses leading to different streams.


Library of University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore came into existence during the year 1966-67. From its initial collection of 26,000 volumes of books and bound periodicals, it has now grown to 1, 69,835 volumes. The University Library moved into its own functional building at GKVK in the year 1976. The University Library is kept open for 12 hours on working days and for limited hours on Saturday and Sundays. Students and staff of the University can become the members of the Library, whereas benefited outsiders who come with the introductory letters from their institutions/ ID card provided by our University Library are permitted for consultation only. The Library of University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore has created a database of Books, Journals, Theses, Reports and Reference sources and it’s made available through ‘OPAC’. The library has also created databases of current periodicals, CD’s, on-line Journals subscribed and digitized database of Theses available in the Library. The Internet Services has been provided at the GKVK library for the Staff and P.G. Students. Eleven Electronics Journals are also subscribed by the University Library. These e-journals can also be accessed at the GKVK Library, Hebbel campus Library and all the colleges and Departments at the GKVK and Hebbel campuses.


Hostel facility of University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore all students are required to live in 7 College Hostels including Girls Hostels with separate arrangements for Post Graduate and Under Graduate Hostels at GKVK Campus. The Boys and Girls Hostels are situated at Mudigere, Chintamani, Ponnampet, Mandya, Shimoga, Hassan. The Chief Wardens are looking after the hostels. There is a common room with a colored TV with Cable facility, internet, Music room, indoor games room and a library having selected books, magazines and news paper etc., besides courts to volley Ball, badminton, Basket Ball and table Tennis in most of the Hostels. The Hostel Cafeteria is equipped with refrigerator, Water Cooler, Solar, LPG Cooking, Job Computer facility, BSNL Telephone booth. Each Hostel Cafeteria is run and managed by the students No Profit no loss basis through Hostel Supervisory Committee All students residing in the Hostels are to abide by Hostel Rules and Regulations/rules.


Medical and Health Care facility of University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore a fully fledged University Hospital under the supervision of a whole time Chief Medical Officer in charge Surgeon, Two Contract Medical Officer, a Lady Medical Officer render round teh clock service to the students and staff members and their families. There are separate ward for Male and female students. All the serious cases are referred to big hospitals like Malya Hospital, Manipal Hospital, and Columbia Hospital.


National Service Scheme of University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore each students of I and II Year participate to earn credits during his degree programme by attending 10 days special camp organized in the adopted colony and completing the course activities. The NSS is coordinate by Dr.Shivalinge Gowda; NSS students are required to work in villages under this scheme.


University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore organizes an interface between industry, faculty and students every year to create awareness regarding job opportunities and there after facilitate planning of their careers. The Directorate arranges campus interviews through initiative both from the Directorate and the industry. The students are counseled on the job requirements and trained for the interview with the help of the faculty and other invited experts. The Directorate in a nutshell is leaving no stone unturned to extend all possible help and support to the students of the University for a comfortable and academically productive stay with excellent opportunities for exhibiting their sports and cultural talents and also a secure future.


Placement Cell of University of Agricultural Sciences – UAS Bangalore the students are provided guidance in seeking jobs in companies, Banks, Industries and seeking higher education in India and abroad and also the fellowship/scholarship available for these studies through a counseling cell. A coordinator helps and guides the students in securing jobs and admission and fellowships for the above purpose.
