GITAM School of Architecture – Visakhapatnam is not simply interested in designing spaces, but work in a dynamic way with what happens in them. Our standard is not so much of bricks and mortar but space itself; we consider the work of the architect as straddling between the hard materiality of building and the reorganizing of existing space. The quest of these aims in architecture makes particular sense in the broader framework of the School, where the propinquity of refined practice across the art and design field underpins a multidisciplinary view of design.
GITAM School of Architecture – Visakhapatnam faculty comprise of practicing artists, designers, architects, curators and writers with international reputation. Not only we want our students to develop original design skills, but know how to communicate them. Visakhapatnam is always our testing ground, with its serene and green area bordered by green hills and the sea. We are both inspired by, and apply our ideas to, the city – combining research with reliability.
The activity of providing library facilities to the GITAM School of Architecture – Visakhapatnam students and staff started along with the starting of academic programmes. The library activity of GITAM started with the setting up of library for College of Engineering in 1980. This was added by library of College of Management Studies 1988, which was followed by the library of GIFT in 1997. To optimize the resource utilization and maximize convenience to the users, the need of centralizing the library facility was felt. Accordingly GITAM Management took a bold step of constructing a huge building of architectural excellence with all modern gadgets.
GITAM School of Architecture – Visakhapatnam central library was commissioned in 2002 and subsequently transformed into Knowledge Resource Centre. The building was ideally and centrally located at the heart of the campus overlooking the vast expanse of scores of acres. It is garlanded by a cluster of academic buildings, classrooms, laboratories, workshops, sports grounds with international standards, canteen and hostel buildings. The hillock of Rushikonda, the legendary abode of saints, surrounded by green pastures and the blue ocean are some of the visual delights in the vast panoramic view from the library.
With a view to providing personal care to the students coming from various corners of the country, the GITAM School of Architecture – Visakhapatnam has built hostels that provide the right academic ambience for students in search of excellence in their pursuits. The disciplined and caring hostel environment helps the student imbibe positive values which serve as a firm foundation for their life and career. With the spirit of sharing and living in a multicultural community, they grow into evolved human beings.
The GITAM School of Architecture – Visakhapatnam administration puts in all efforts to help the students feel at home in terms of comforts and concern of the hostel personnel. Eco-friendly environment, encouraging academic ambience, uncompromising quality of hygiene, steam cooking, safe drinking water, round the clock security, availability of qualified doctors and resident wardens, indoor games facilities, uninterrupted power supply- all these ensure a very safe and secure stay for the student.
At present 06 food courts cater to the needs of the students and staff on the GITAM School of Architecture – Visakhapatnam campus. These food courts are located in different places of the campus and serve different types of food to suit the divergent taste of the students and staff. At present, college offers five year Bachelor of Architecture program which is approved by the Council of Architecture (CoA), New Delhi (Vide ref. No. GU/CAO/R/Arch/159/2011. Dated 19th February 2011).
