Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton was founded in 1971 as "Grant MacEwan Community College" and offered primarily one and two year programs, such as diplomas and certificates. In 1988 it received approval to offer university transfer credit, and in 1999 dropped the word "community" from its name. Since 2004 it has offered full bachelor's degrees, which are usually only done by universities in Canada. By 2006, the institution was referred to in all publicity materials simply as "MacEwan", reflecting the addition of more university-like degree programs.

On September 24, 2009, the institution was officially renamed a university. Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton became an accredited degree-granting institution in 2004 and offers a baccalaureate degrees in arts, child and youth care, commerce, nursing, science and starting in 2011 a Bachelor of Music in Jazz and Contemporary Popular Music. The institution expects to add additional degrees such as communications studies and social work. Prior to the renaming, MacEwan was the largest college in Alberta, but it remains the largest transfer institution in the province. On September 24, 2009 Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton became Alberta's sixth university. In 1975, Justin VandeKraats and Daryl Van Driel created the unique crest that Grant MacEwan boasts.

Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton is an educational institution located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.Originally, Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton operated out of number of small store-front style campuses. The facilities included Old Scona School (10523-84 Avenue), the Workmen's Compensation building (10048-101A Avenue), and the former Dominion Store in Cromdale (8020-118 Avenue), with the offices and administration located in the Canada Trust building (10150-100 Street). In 1988, the government of Don Getty committed $100 million for the construction of the City Centre Campus, which, at the time, was the largest single capital project in the history of the Department of Advanced Education.

As of 2009, Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton has four separate campuses, each with a different focus. The largest campus is the City Centre Campus, which comprises five city blocks near downtown Edmonton and is home to most of the degree programs. The City Centre campus includes the new Robbins Health Learning Centre, opened in Fall 2007. A second campus, the Alberta College campus, is also located downtown. Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton campuses are located in the neighbourhoods of Mill Woods (South Campus) and West Jasper Place (Centre for the Arts and Communications).


Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton City Centre Campus is built on the former Canadian National rail yards on the northern fringe of the downtown core. CN donated the land, and construction began in the early 1990s.The main complex consists of the 105th, 106th, and 107th Street Buildings, and the Centre for Sport and Wellness (or 108th Street Building). Across a pedway there is access to a parkade, and the two newest buildings, the MacEwan Residence (2006), and the Robbins Health Learning Centre (2007).

Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton Centre for Sport and Wellness is home to a pool and gymnasium. Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton building was chosen as the host site for Edmonton's new International Basketball League franchise, the Edmonton Energy. Starting in 2010, all Edmonton Energy home games will be played at the Universiade Pavilion. The Griffins, MacEwan's athletic organization, compete in intercollegiate sports.


In June 2000, the government of Alberta assumed control of the formerly private Alberta College. Alberta College was then incorporated as a fourth Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton campus. Alberta College is only 1 km from the City Centre Campus, but plays host to different programs. Alberta College is predominately devoted to academic upgrading, music and ESL (English as a Second Language) programs, while the City Centre Campus offers academics. The Centre for the Arts campus (formerly the Jasper Place Campus) is located in Edmonton's west end on the north east corner of 156 Street and 100 Avenue.

Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton Centre for the Arts and Communications houses several creative programs: Arts and Cultural Management, Design Studies - with majors in Photography, Illustration, Exhibit Presentation, Digital Media and Motion Image, Fine Art, Journalism, Music - both degree and diploma programs, Professional Writing - applied degree, Theatre Arts and Theatre Production. Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton South Campus is located in the Mill Woods area of Edmonton's south side. The educational focus of the campus is Human Services, housing the programs for Disability Studies, Social Work, and for the Bachelor's Degree in Child and Youth Care, one of MacEwan's four degree programs.


Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton has four schools and faculties: the Centre for the Arts and Communications, the Faculty of Arts and Science, and martial arts centre, the Faculty of Health and Community Studies, and the School of Business. Grant MacEwan University - Edmonton offers diplomas, certificates, applied degrees, and four-year bachelor degrees in arts, science, nursing, child and youth care, and commerce.
