Nowgong College established on the 7th Aug. 1944 is one of the pioneer colleges of Assam. Established with the permission from the University of Calcutta, the college has been playing a pivotal role since its inception. Thanks to the unsparing efforts of the teachers, the existence of the college soon made itself felt.It contributed largely to the awaking of the people to the values of higher education.
Nowgong College has a distinctive blazon of its own, and plays a significant role in the social and intellectual life of the state. We can still look for inspiration to some of the extra ordinary achievers of public life who were alumni of this institution. The college celebrated its golden Jubilee in its fiftieth year in1994. Located in the heart of Nagaon town in the district of Nagaon, Nowgong College started its journey with only 140 students under the leadership of Sahityacharyyya Jojneswar Sharma. With about 90 teachers now, the College primarily imparts undergraduate level education with facilities for major courses in all the faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce.
Nowgong College is situated at the Central Point of Nagaon District of Assam and N.E. India. Location is at 26O05 North Latitude and 92O44 East Longitude. Nagaon is almost 120 Km away from Guwahati , the capital of Assam. It is well connected with road ways and rail ways. The National Highway No. 37 passes through the town . The college is situated by the side of the N.H. 37.
Nowgong College Central Library, named Mahendranath Maihangdang dekaphukan Library came into being along with the establishment of the college itself on 7 th August, 1944 . At present the college library is fully equipped with digital technology. The college library has played significant role for the development of higher education in central Assam . The library has around 52000 nos. of books, 20 nos. of journals/ magazines and many news papers and periodicals. The library has a distinctive blazon of its own and it played a significant role in the intellectual development of the students community in particular and society in general.
Nowgong College has a well equipped Girl's hostel located in the college premises. For admission in the hostel a student has to apply in a prescribed form available in the college office. Admission will be made on the basis of merit, consideration of distance, physical disability etc. The Career Guidance and Counseling cell is committed to its undergraduate students to provide all possible assistance in choosing the appropriate avenue. To help the students to realize their primary ambition, it has become imperative to counsel and encourage them to set definite goals.
