Government of India established Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata in 1995 as an autonomous academic institution under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The Institute was subsequently registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961. Located at Kolkata and named after the legendary film maestro Satyajit Ray, The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata , the second of its kind in the country, is a National Center offering post-graduate diploma courses in Film and Television. Besides offering regular full time courses, the Institute has plans to undertake project development, funding and production of fiction and non-fiction films. In addition, research work on film and television related issues are in the offing.
The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata is equipped with up to date technology and is aimed at producing film and television professionals, capable of independent creative and innovative work in the field and thus contributing to the growth and development of cinema in the country.
The objective of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata is to impart practical and theoretical training in all aspects of film and television production, including introduction to related fields, to rant Certificates, Diplomas, Honours Diplomas and such other certificates etc. as may be instituted from time to time to the trainees on successful completion of prescribed courses of study, and to co-ordinate the activities of education and skill development in the field of film and television programme conception and production.
Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata is a fully funded autonomous institution under the Ministry of Information and broadcasting, run by a Society constituted by the Government of India. The Society, headed by a President, runs the Institute through a Governing Council (GC). The Society, Governing Council and Standing Finance Committee have officials of the Ministry of I and B as ex-officio members representing the Government. There is an Academic Council (AC), which is empowered to take policy decisions as regards all academic and production-related affairs of the Institute.
Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata is situated on the eastern fringe of the city of Kolkata, SRFTI has a sprawling green campus with lakes and ponds that offers an array of settings for the discerning filmmaker with camera eye. Conveniently located on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass Road, the campus is about half-hour drive from the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport and about an hour's drive from Howrah and Sealdah, the city's two major railway stations. It is well connected with different parts of Kolkata through a network of buses and auto-rickshaws. Important landmarks near the campus are the Peerless Hospital and the Bengal Ambuja housing complex.
The Boys’ and Girls’ Hostels are equipped with all modern amenities including a multi-gym, and can accommodate 160 students on sharing basis. The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata has an in-house Canteen to cater to the needs of students and staff at reasonable rate. There is a Post Office inside the campus. Internet and photo copying facilities are also available to the students at a nominal rate.
Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata has a well-furnished guest-house with 11 Double-bed AC Rooms, 2 AC Luxury Suites and 4 Non-AC Double-bed Rooms [with all conveniences like TV, intercom, room-service etc] and a spacious lobby and dining hall. Guest-house accommodation is available for the guests of the Institute and visiting professionals, and also, at very reasonable rates, to ex-students, parents of students etc.
In the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata campus, There is a Students' Association run and managed by the students. The members are elected by the students from among themselves to represent their perspective.
Students Association plays an active role through student representatives in Academic Council, Library Committee, and Screening Committee etc. as well as in other co-curricular events of the Institute.
The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata has a small film library which houses collections of Indian and foreign films - the largest being the Cine Central Collection of 400 foreign feature films and 914 short and documentary films. The Federation of Film Societies of India (Eastern Region) Collection has 36 feature films and 38 short films, and the SRFTI – NFDC collection has 66 feature films. These film prints are available to faculty and students for reference.
The fact that the regional office of the National Film Archives of India is located in Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata facilitates an uninterrupted flow of rare films for the students' viewing. The Archive has a small but significant collection of 71 classics, which are available for academic screening and discussions.
College offers different kind of Post Graduate Diploma courses leading to fill industry specialization. The first student exchange programme held in 2001 enabled two students of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute – SRFTI Kolkata to go to Konrad Wolf Film School in Potsdam, Germany and make a short fiction film titled ‘Forth World’. Two students from the German film school also came to SRFTI and made a documentary film titled ‘Howrah Howrah’. Apart from this, exchange possibilities are being explored with other film schools, both national and international.
