With the starting of this college 43 years ago, the longfelt need of this remote area for higher education is fulfilled. The college has an impressive track record of excellent performance.

It was affiliated to Mysore University from 1965. From 1991 onwards it is working under the wings of Kuvempu University. Sri Jagadguru Chandrashekhara Bharathi Memorial College - Sri J C B M College Chikmagalur boys’ hostel was commissioned in 1972 in a spacious building, which can accommodate 120 students. It has all the amenities required to the students and the routine includes prayer, yoga, pranayama, meditation, sports, and personality development programs. The ladies hostel started in the year 2003 is also accommodated in separate quarters and adheres to the same routine as that of the boys’ hostel. The annual hostel day is an important event celebrated with great enthusiasm by the inmates of both hostels.

There are two NSS units in Sri Jagadguru Chandrashekhara Bharathi Memorial College - Sri J C B M College Chikmagalur to involve students in the nation building activities. These units are rendering yeoman service all these years and have earned distinction at various levels. Our NSS officers have won many awards for the units and for themselves. The annual camp is conducted in remote places for 10 days and some useful community work like preparing playground, making road, constructing rural lavatories & smokeless choolas etc are taken up with the active participation of local people. The volunteers also take active part in public awareness programs like Aids awareness, Environment protection, Anti corruption movement, Pulse Polio, Blood donation etc. The NCC unit with 100 cadets of which one third is girls, is actively involved in motivating students to become responsible citizen of our country. Cadets from our coy have taken part in different camps and earned kudos for their dedication and performance. It is a matter of pride that one cadet was selected for Republic Day Parade held in New Delhi.
