Poornaprajna College – Udupi was founded in 1960 by the Swamijis of eight Mutts of Udupi. But, in February 1962, with a view to streamline the day-to-day working of the institution, its maintenance and governance were handed over to Admar Mutt Education Council, a registered society functioning under the leadership of H. H. Sri Sri Sri Vibudhesha Theertha Swamiji of Admar Mutt. Poornaprajna College – Udupi is situated at Udupi –Karnataka.
Initially, Poornaprajna College – Udupi provided courses in Arts and Commerce streams. In 1963, Science subjects were introduced at the Pre-University level. Two years later, Science stream was started at the degree level. Ten years later, in 1975, Management studies were introduced at the degree level. In 2001, the Pre-University courses were detached from the College and transferred to the newly established Poornaprajna Unaided Pre-University College.
In its early days, Poornaprajna College – Udupi had the privilege of having eminent scholars and writers like Prof. V.M.Inamdar, Dr. Shankar Mokasi Punekar, Prof. Gopalakrishna Adiga and Dr. P. Narayana Rao as its Principals. After these titans, the tradition was continued by able administrators such as Prof. K.G. Tantry, Prof. Sripathi Upadhya, Prof. H. Shivarama Shetty, Prof. Sudhakar Rao, Prof. M. Subrahmanya, Prof. N. B. Dixit, Dr. S. L. Karnik, Prof. A. K. Halapet, Dr. N.A. Madyastha, and Prof. S. Subhashchandra. Now, the College is progressing forward under the able administration of Prof. Rajmohan.
Poornaprajna College – Udupi Library is housed in a spacious, well-furnished two-storied building with reading room facility. There are well over 40,000 volumes of most recent publications on various subjects. More than a hundred newspapers and magazines are made available to students for premises use. The book bank lends volumes to deserving students which they can retain till their examinations. In addition to the main library, there are departmental libraries accessible to students. At Poornaprajna College – Udupi there are well-equipped and spacious laboratories in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Computer Science departments. Botany and Zoology laboratories have considerable specimen collection in their museums. There are full-fledged research laboratories attached to Physics, Botany and Zoology departments. There is well-arranged and spacious Seminar hall which is called as Mini-Auditoriam. Where all the cultural as well Academic programs like meetings, competations and all the important programms are held.
Poornaprajna College – Udupi has a canteen which provides hygienic eatables, tea, coffee and lunch at reasonable rates during working days. Though the canteen is given on lease, quality of food, prices, hygiene and sanitation standards are regulated and constantly monitored by the Canteen Committee of the College. The Indoor Stadium has been newly constructed on the account of Golden Jublie Celebration in the 2009-2010 and this Indoor Stadium is well equpped and Spacious and used by all the Students and Staff Members.
National Service Scheme [NSS] aims at the importance of democratic living and self-less service. The motto of NSS is “Not Me But You”. The symbol of NSS is based on the Giant Rath (Chariot) of World famous Konark Sun Temple at Orissa. There are eight bars in the wheel representing 24 hours of the day, where the NSS volunteers should be lively, active, energetic and full of spirit.
At Poornaprajna College – Udupi, origin of NCC can be traced back to the 'University Corps', which was created under the Indian Defence Act 1917, with the object to make up the shortages of the Army. National Cadet Corps is a Tri-Services Organisation , comprising Army, Navy and Air Force, engaged in grooming the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens. In 1920, when the Indian Territorial Act was passed, the 'University Corps' was replaced by the University Training Corps (UTC). Many reputed firms conduct campus interviews for the final year degree students and offer placements in the fields of Software, B.P.O., Electronics, Electricals etc. Apart from this, there is provision for campus selection for higher education.
