Sadguru Gadge Maharaj College - Satara was started on June, 1954 with only 54 students in a single Arts Faculty. It flourished over the years to become a multi-faculty institution with 22 departments, a large number of support services and interdisciplinary activities at present. The campus is spread over about 6.8 hectors. The total student strength of Senior and Junior College is more than 6000. The number of teaching and non-teaching staff is above 200.
Sadguru Gadge Maharaj College - Satara is the first college in India opened at the Tehsil place. Our students hail from 350 distant villages. More than 95% students come from rural area. The objective of the founder of our Sanstha, Padmabhushan Dr. Karma veer Bhaurao Patil was to impart education to the poorest of the poor through self-help; irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
The Rayat Shikshan Sanstha entered the field of higher education in the year 1947 when its first college, Chhatrapati Shivaji College, Satara, was established. On 15th August 1953, Karma veer Anna publicly announced his intention to start Sadguru Gadge Maharaj College - Satara the following year. Anna had observed that there were colleges at district head-quarters like Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur and Kolhapur. But the poor people in the rural areas could not send their children to these colleges.
Sadguru Gadge Maharaj College - Satara education was ‘too expensive’ for them. Therefore, Anna decided to take higher education to the huts of the poor. As a first step in this direction, he made up his mind to start a college at a Tehsil place. As per the announcement made earlier, an application was sent to the University of Poona seeking its permission to start Sadguru Gadge Maharaj College - Satara. The Local Inquiry Commission of the Poona University visited the college premises and granted the affiliation. The University of Poona asked Anna to pay a deposit amount of Rs. 50,000/- before opening the college. Anna had no money with him, but he didn’t lose heart. He approached two of his acquaintances in Pune, Mr. Baburao Sanas the ex-Mayor of Poona and Mr. Shankarrao Ursal, the then Mayor of Poona. The problem was discussed and resolved. They went to Mahatma Phule (Vegetable) Market and held a meeting of the stall-keepers, vegetable vendors, workers and laborers. These are the reasons that every girl-student aspires to get admitted in. It is being run on the campus of Sadguru Gadge Maharaj College - Satara, the college established by the great educationist and visionary Padmabhushan Karma veer Bhaurao Patil. The number of students seeking Higher education has been rapidly increasing on the campus and as a result of it, the present provision of Sou. Sumatibai Pandurang Patil Girl’s Hostel proved to be insufficient to meet the demands of the changing trend of admittance. Taking into the consideration of the urgency of the fact, Sadguru Gadge Maharaj College - Satara Principal Dr. Mohan Rajmane had submitted the proposal of a New Girl’s Hostel of estimating amount of Rs. 10000000/- to the U. G. C. He had very systematically officiated the proposal if the construction of the new Ladies’ hostel.
Accordingly, the construction work of the new building has been completed in about one year and a very decent and well furnished structure invites attention of the passer-by now. The installing cornerstone ceremony took place at the auspicious hands of Honorable Minister Dr. Patangraoji Kadam, Vice-Chairman of Sadguru Gadge Maharaj College - Satara Dr. Anil Patil on 25th April 2007 whereas it was inaugurated on 22nd September 2008 in the presence of Dr. Patangraoji Kadam, Dr. Anil Patil, Dr. N. D. Patil. This hostel boasts of 49 rooms that are well furnished with all the modern amenities. Prin. Dr. Mohan Rajmane, Prof. V. J. Patil, Prof. B. J. Kale, Prof. R. B. Ingole, Shri. V. D. Bhoj et.al. have been instrumental in actualizing the project.
The National cadet corps (NCC) has its genesis in the Sadguru Gadge Maharaj College - Satara which was created under the India Defiance Act 1917 with the object to make up the shortage of the Army in 1920, when the Indian Territorial Act was passed, the ‘University Corps’ was replaced by the ‘University Training Corps (UTC) in 1942 the UTC was renamed as the University officers Training Corps (UDTC). The need to create a youth organization at National level to train the young boys and girls to be better citizens and future leaders of our great country in all walks of life, including Defiance forces, was rightly realized by our leaders. A committee under Pandit HM Kunzru was set up in 1946 at the behest of our First Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The NCC Act XXXVI of 1948 under the Ministry of Defiance (MOD).
