St Josephs College - Kohima started functioning in March 1985 with Pre-University Courses in Arts (including a Vocational Course) and Commerce, and was affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, in the same year. Degree Courses in Arts (Bachelor of Arts) and in Commerce (Bachelor of Commerce) were started in 1988. With the establishment of a University within the State of Nagaland in July 1994.
It is included in the List of Colleges under Section 2 (f) & 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956 and has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council with the B Grade (One of the two Colleges in Nagaland accredited by NAAC). The management of the College is vested with the
St Josephs College - Kohima Society of the Diocese of Kohima. Besides the Diocesan Fathers who are in charge of the administration of the College, it has Fathers from the Society of Jesus (SJ) and Sisters belonging to the Sisters of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (SABS) and Congregation of Mother Carmel (CMC) as members of the staff.

In order to realize this mission, St Josephs College - Kohima has set the following objectives: help the students become men and women of character; help them become men and women committed to life-time learning; help them make a harmonious blend of faith and culture; help them to strive continually after excellence in every field; instill in them the spirit of unselfish service of their brothers and sisters, especially the poor, and sensitise them to current socio-economic, political and cultural issues; provide an education that is socially relevant and useful for life. It is the synthesis of theories with working knowledge, together avenues to exploit all the available resources; we can mould our students into thorough professionals, who would become the leaders of their profession.
St Josephs College - Kohima aims at achieving 100% computer literacy for all students. To begin with, basic knowledge in computer applications will be imparted to all final year Degree students. Attendance at these classes will be compulsory and an annual fee of Rs. 500/- will be charged. Exemption will be granted if a certificate of attendance at a similar course can be produced. The College offers also Certificate and Diploma courses in computer applications.
Sports facility at
