With this noble verse in mind, Swahid Peoli Phukan College – Sivasagar a pioneer institution of higher education was established in the year 1970. The college was originally established in Michamara Kumargaon VGR. After subsequent modification and improvement, the college now stands proudly in a peaceful site at Namti Chariali, situated in the southern part of the greater Sivasagar District.
Swahid Peoli Phukan College – Sivasagar began with just 13 students, and minimal infrastructure has already marched a long way and celebrated its 'Silver Jubilee' in 1995. In 2004, the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) awarded the college 'B' grade on the basis of its performance and contribution to the sphere of inculcating and disseminating higher education.
Though Swahid Peoli Phukan College – Sivasagar was initially started as an Arts College, now both Science and Commerce streams are introduced in the Higher Secondary level. The College has the credit of successfully running the Major and Pass courses in the Degree level of Arts section. Further, the College has the privilege of hosting study centre for Post Graduate Courses in Assamese and Sociology under the Directorate of Distance Education, Dibrugarh University and of different programmes under K.K. Handique State Open University. 15 specific courses under the convergence scheme of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) as well as of running P.G. Diploma Courses in Enterpreneurship Development (1 year), Certificate/ Diploma/ Advance Diploma Courses in Performing Arts (1 year each), Diploma in Tour and Travel Management, Certificate Course on Dr. Ambedkar Studies (6 Months), Diploma in HUman Rights, Certificate Course on Jawaharlal Nehru Studies (1 year).
A well-equipped computerized library is housed in the first floor of Swahid Peoli Phukan College – Sivasagar building. The library is enriched with text books, reference books on different subjects, a series of Encyclopedia, popular series, projector with slides, Research Project Reports, Dissertations etc. The college also subscribes important journals and newspapers of National and International repute. A well accommodated reading room is also attached to the library and the students can have easy access to it during the college hours.
