Surendranath College – Kolkata an institution of higher education with long heritage, was founded in 1884, by the eminent scholar, orator and statesman Rashtraguru Surendranath Banerjea established with the noble vision of fostering a spirit of freedom, sacrifice and lofty idealism in the youth of our country, it has evolved, in course of its hundred and twenty one years of existence, into a premier institution of learning. Its goal today is to provide quality education to students of all sections of society irrespective of gender, academic and socio-economic standing and to enable them to stand up to the challenges of the new millennium with courage and conviction. Surendranath College – Kolkata offers different kind of undergraduate courses.
Surendranath College – Kolkata was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1972. Standing amidst the din and bustle of one of the busiest thoroughfares of Calcutta, the College has been a witness at close quarters to various ups and downs in the social and political history. In its career of more than a hundred years it has had to pass through both fair and foul, sunshine and rough weather.
The management of Surendranath College – Kolkata is presently run by the Governing Body formed under the Calcutta University First Statutes in 1979 (Clause 93) with Prof Sudin Chattopadhyay as President and Dr. C. S. Sarkar, Principal, as Ex-officio Secretary. It is relevant to mention in this connection that the Governing Body took over charge from Hon'ble High Court appointed Administrator on 17th December 2001.
Surendranath College – Kolkata is centrally located in the city of Kolkata, being barely 200m from Sealdah railway station and is thereby very well connected to 24 Pgs (North & South) districts. Surendranath College – Kolkata comprises two buildings, namely Main Building and Science Building. In both buildings, the Classrooms and Galleries are used for Lectures of almost all Departments according to requirement as per routine allotment. Adequate toilet facilities for students, both boys and girls, as well as teaching and non-teaching staff, both male and female, are provided and maintained properly by College authorities. Drinking water, purified as far as practicable by necessary infrastructure, is provided. Provision of water in the College for other purposes is quite upto the mark.
Surendranath College – Kolkata owns a highly equipped library owning nearly 27,000 (approx.) books including some rare titles and some Journals as well. The library also provides adequate reading facilities for students and the staff as well. In addition, in order to provide ready access, there are also seminar libraries in almost all departments.
